I don’t know who invented the whole “tossing a coin into a fountain to ask for a wish” thing, but I’ve read that in the Trevi Fountain (Italy), more than 1.5 million of Euros is collected in coins every year.

By tossing a coin, you earned the favor of the gods and they rewarded you by granting you a wish.

WEIRD STUFF HAPPENING AT THE FOUNTAIN

Police officers from Valencia, Spain, have arrested a man after trying to drown a woman in a park fountain, repeatedly putting her head under water.
Apparently both voluntarily entered the fountain when a third individual would have approached them to ask the detainee for his cell phone to take a picture of them and flee from the place with the phone. That is why the alleged aggressor would have started an argument with the woman at that moment, considering that she was in cahoots with the man who had just robbed him.
People began to swirl around the fountain yelling at the man to let the woman go, until two of them decided to jump into the water to start beating the guy up.
