Telegram is an instant messaging application founded by brothers Nikolai and Pavel Durov. The parent company of Telegram, Telegram Messenger LLP, was founded in 2013 in Berlin, Germany.

The Durov brothers, previously known for founding the Russian social network VKontakte (VK), decided to create Telegram with the aim of providing a secure, private, and ad-free messaging platform. They focused on privacy and security as fundamental principles of the platform, offering features such as end-to-end encryption and the option for self-destructing messages.




Telegram quickly gained popularity due to its focus on privacy and security, especially among those who value the confidentiality of their online communications. The app has been praised for its intuitive user interface and advanced features, such as broadcast channels and groups with the capacity for thousands of members.
