THE CONQUEST OF THE SEASdavid
Throughout history, human ingenuity and skill have allowed us to master the seas and travel great distances across rivers and oceans, thus transforming the course of civilization.
The first records of boats date back around 10,000 years, with simple rafts made of reeds or tree trunks. The Egyptians were among the first to develop more advanced ships, using wood and sails to navigate the Nile.
The oldest known canoe is the Pesse Canoe, discovered in the Netherlands and dated around 8000 B.C. It is made from a tree trunk and shows that even in prehistoric times, boats were constructed to navigate rivers.
The Phoenicians, around 1500 B.C., were the first great navigators and traders of the Mediterranean. They built robust ships and developed advanced navigation techniques, allowing them to establish trade routes throughout the Mediterranean and beyond.
The ancient Polynesians were expert navigators who used boats called "catamarans" and "outrigger canoes." They traveled vast distances across the Pacific using the stars, ocean currents, and birds as guides. It is believed that they colonized islands spread over thousands of miles of ocean long before Europeans began their explorations.
Between the 8th and 11th centuries, the Vikings built their famous longships, narrow boats that could navigate both the high seas and shallow rivers. These ships allowed them to explore, trade, and raid territories from the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean and North America.
Finally, from the 15th century onwards, with the invention of the caravel and the galleon, Europeans began to explore and dominate the oceans. Navigators like Christopher Columbus, Vasco da Gama, and Ferdinand Magellan opened trade and exploration routes that connected continents and cultures, marking the beginning of the modern era of navigation.
