THE MISFORTUNE OF LEONARD CURE
The sheriff's office in Camden County, Georgia, released a video in which a police officer stops a vehicle for speeding and ends up getting into a fight with the driver, ultimately shooting and killing him.
Behind this story, there's another quite remarkable one that can help explain why Leonard Cure, the deceased driver, reacted the way he did. You see, Cure had spent 17 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit (he was released in 2020), and it's possible that when the officer told him he was going to jail (apparently, traffic violations in the state of Georgia are criminal offenses), it triggered a post-traumatic stress that made him react violently.
Cure had received over $800K in compensation (about $50K for each unjustly incarcerated year) and was trying to rebuild his life. While his reaction towards the officer was far from ideal, it's undeniably tragic the misfortune this man endured.
