THE RACE FOR ROBOTICS FEELS A LOT LIKE THE SPACE RACE OF THE '60S

Lately, a bunch of robotics companies have been dropping videos of humanoid robots doing things straight out of a sci-fi movie. Flips, jumps, runs — all with a kind of fluidity most of us can only dream of. And even though they say it’s not CGI, some of those moves definitely raise an eyebrow.

EngineAI from Shenzhen and Boston Dynamics from the U.S. are showing off robots with insane coordination and agility. They claim it’s all real: reinforcement learning, years of development, teams of experts from places like Berkeley… but let’s be honest — doesn’t it feel more like a bold vision of the future disguised as a real demo?

Without diving into conspiracy theories, it brings to mind that old suspicion about the Moon landing being staged — allegedly filmed on a set just to beat the Soviets in the 1960s space race. Whether it was real or not isn’t the point; people believed it, and that was enough to seal the deal.

Maybe we’re watching something similar now in the robotics race: videos that aren’t exactly fake, but definitely aren’t showing where we are — they’re showing where they want us to think we’re headed.

THE KUNGFU BOT FROM UNITREE ROBOTICS COULD REPLACE YOUR BOUNCER

Unitree Robotics is a Chinese company specializing in advanced robotics. Founded in 2016 by Xingxing Wang and based in Hangzhou, the company gained fame for its robotic dogs, known for their agility, stability, and affordability compared to competitors like Boston Dynamics.

Although these robots are often marketed as tools to assist humanity in research, industry, and consumer applications, the truth is that they could also be deployed in warfare. Best not to dwell on that too much—like drones, they are a total game-changer.

For now, let’s focus on Unitree Robotics' latest masterpiece: the Kungfu BOT, a bipedal version of their robotic dogs with a humanoid appearance and the ability to perform an impressive 720-degree spinning kick. Imagine facing one of these if you step out of line at a bar!

CHINA RELEASES DRONES WITH ARMED ROBOT DOGS

The perfect soldier of the future is today's shooter-games player.




China is starting to flirt with the future. A few months ago we saw the famous remote-controlled robot dogs, with machine guns attached to their backs. Now, to build on top of that tech, they have added some drones to take the robots to the rear of enemy troops. They are the new "Fallschirmjaeger", the German paratroopers of the World War 2.

RAN OVER BY A DELIVERY ROBOT

The fact that machines and robots are going to replace many of the current jobs is something that has been discussed for a long time, but if robots are going to do the work of a person does not mean that accidents won't occur. At the moment, that thing of complying with the laws of Isaac Asimov is not being kept at all times. At least the first law, the one where robots are not supposed to hurt humans.
